From self-employed to business owner to investor

There is a ladder. Employee, self-employed, manager, owner, investor, entrepreneur. Most Irish business owners are further down it than they think, technically self-employed, carrying all the risk of ownership and few of the benefits.

What moving up requires

Building something that holds its value without you in it.

  • Documented systems
  • A team that decides
  • Financials somebody else could read
  • Customer relationships that belong to the business rather than to you personally

Why this matters more in Ireland than people admit

A large share of Irish businesses are family owned and a great many owners are within a decade of wanting out, with no plan for how.

A business that cannot run without you cannot be sold and cannot be handed on.

The work that makes it sellable is the same work that makes it bearable to own in the meantime.
